San Polo
This sestiere is named after Campo San Polo, the second largest square of Venice after St.Mark’s Square, and the church of St. Paul the Apostle, called San Polo by the Venetians. The main area is Rialto, the most ancient bulk of the city, famous for the homonymous market and bridge. Strolling through the market means venturing among many stands full of fruits and fishes, bàcari (small typical Venetian bars) and taverns. The bridge is one of the four built across the Canal Grande, certainly the most ancient and famous. Originally called Ponte della Moneta (Bridge of the Coin), probably due to the toll required to cross it, it was subsequently renamed Rialto Bridge as a consequence of the growing importance of the market and its close association with it. The Basilica of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari and the Scuola Grande di San Rocco are two landmarks of great artistic and architectural importance. The former, also called Basilica dei Frari (Basilica of the Monks) hosts many pieces of art (among them two paintings by Tiziano) and the tombs of many Venetian personalities. The latter is one of the most prestigious and charming buildings of Venice and is enriched by the wonderful original pictorial decoration by Tintoretto.
Santa Croce
It is the sestiere which connects Venice to the mainland through the Freedom Bridge and, despite being the smallest one, it underwent more demolitions and transformations than any other. It is named after the Holy Cross of Jerusalem, a fragment of which was preserved in the homonymous church, subsequently demolished by Napoleon. Two of the four bridges built across the Canal Grande are here – the Ponte degli Scalzi and the Ponte del Calatrava (built only in 2008).
